The Psychology of the Last 15 Feet

Fig. 1Cover

There is no official line on a golf course that marks the last 15 feet.

No paint. No change in the grass.

Yet almost every golfer recognizes when the golf ball crosses that invisible boundary.

Something changes.

Not on the green.

Inside the golfer.

An Invisible Threshold

From a physical perspective, very little changes inside 15 feet.

The hole remains 4.25 inches wide.

The green behaves exactly as before.

What changes is attention.

Cognitive Engineering on the Green

Putting is fundamentally an interaction between perception, decision making, and movement.

We call this cognitive engineering.

The objective is not to think more.

The objective is to create conditions that require less unnecessary thinking.

Closing Thoughts

The distance never changes.

Only the mind does.
